Top performers in the hot Namibian sun
The most technologically advanced crushing and screening equipment
available is playing an important role in both the diamond mining and
construction industries in Namibia.
During the past year, Rex Quip (PTY) LTD, the Black
Economic Empowerment
Namibian supplier of well-known European and South African brand names in
earthmoving, mining, building and civil construction equipment, has sold
crushing and screening equipment worth more than R8-million. Rex Quip is
the Namibian dealer for Pilot Crushtec, the Gauteng-based manufacturer of
crushing and screening solutions and the South African representative of
Terex Finlay.
Mr Alan Lang, Sales Director of Rex Quip (PTY) LTD, said that with the
mobile and static crushing and screening equipment available from Pilot
Crushtec, Rex Quip is able to offer complete solutions for mining, civil
and building construction.
“The Terex Finlay brand is well-known,” he said. “In southern Africa this
brand has a considerable market share. Mobile crushing and screening units
remain popular in mining and with civil construction,” he said. “On the
other hand, a major supplier of building sand, aggregates, bricks and
pavers in Windhoek, Brick and Concrete Industries, has preferred a Finlay
200E static washing plant that is more cost effective.
“By improving the washing process this customer has a 22% saving on sand
that was previously discarded. When it comes to cement, the plant is able
to achieve a saving of 15% to 18% on cement in mixes for delivery by
ready-mix trucks.
“With our input, and a growing demand from mining and construction, sales
of equipment from Pilot Crushtec have grown considerably in Namibia in
recent years.

“Competition is stiff, but our market share is growing. In mobile scalpers
and screens I believe that we now have 70% of the market share in
Namibia,” he said. “With regard to washing plants, we have achieved 100%
of the market share.”
Mr Lang mentioned the introduction last year of the first Finlay 883
Megatrak Mark 2 heavy duty scalping machine that has been commissioned at
Orange River Diamond Mines. The heavy duty tracked Finlay 883 Megatrak
Mark 2 scalping machine, that separates the plus 40mm material from
diamond bearing fines, is currently being used in exploration.
During the past year, the Finlay 683 and 693 Supertrak mobile rinsers that
provide production rates of 180t/h and 300t/h, respectively, in wet
screening operations, have been sold to diamond recovery operations on the
west coast. Another Pilot Crushtec product that has sold well in Namibia
is the Tecon Crushpactor, a tow-behind grid roller used in road
construction.
Looking to the future, Mr Lang said the mining and construction industries
in Namibia are growing and strong technical support for Pilot Crushtec and
Terex Finlay products, provided by Rex Quip (PTY) LTD, is a distinctive
advantage in a competitive market.
“Each month a technician in our employ travels an average of 8 000 km to
meet our back-up service needs, while at the same time we provide
customers with consignment stock spares because distances are so vast in
Namibia,” he said.
Commenting on sales in Namibia, Mr Graham Kleinhans, sales manager for
Pilot Crushtec, said state-of-the-art crushing and screening equipment
from the company is operating well in tough conditions, with searing
temperatures of between 40 deg. C and 50 deg. C.
“We see tremendous prospects for the Pilot Crushtec modular range and for
Terex Finlay equipment in Namibia,” said Mr Kleinhans. “South African
expertise and local input by Rex Quip (PTY) LTD have made Pilot Crushtec
and Terex Finlay leading brand names in that country,” he added.
